English is
offered from Year 1. Trained native speakers take small groups of pupils for
about 45 minutes each week and the emphasis is on ‚learning through doing‘.
Pupils are exposed to the spoken word from the start in the form of songs,
chants, games and stories.They hear
mostly the target language and are encouraged to produce language as early as
they feel they can. The most important thing is that the children have fun when
learning as we feel this is crucial in developing a lifelong interest in
English and other foreign languages.
In Year 4,
pupils come together for an extra hour of English in a more formal style. They
use the ‚Playway 4‘ coursebook, have regular tasks to do outside of the lesson
and also do short tests so they can see how much progress they have made. By the end of Year 4, they should have basic
competence in the four skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing.
